Introduction

One of the most important characteristics of a leader is their ability to motivate, empower, and inspire. Leadership is essentially a mindset, a method of thought and behavior that motivates and directs others. It goes beyond titles and official positions. Jesse Keyser aims to offer capabilities and confidence to those who have the courage to commit. For him, a part of being a successful leader is having enough faith in his employees to give them space to flourish, becoming independent thinkers at the top of their positions. Influence and positive change are created by cultivating a mindset, demonstrating that leadership is more about behavior and attitude than title.

Turning Obstacles into Opportunities

Instead of having a set of guidelines that are standard among his teams, Keyser has been able to develop and hone his leadership skills and abilities through ownership of multiple businesses. This has allowed him to better serve his employees and his work environment. For Keyser, leadership means 'being able to create a consensus'. A general standard of agreement between a leader and his team creates harmonious relations that lead to better operations. In an interview with Leap Brands CGO, Chaz Cervino, Keyser stated that he “inspires people and helps them recognize that obstacles are actually opportunities”. By motivating staff to see challenges as opportunities, managers may create a proactive and resilient work environment. Employees are more likely to attack challenges creatively and resolutely when they perceive obstacles as an opportunity for innovation, growth, and improvement. This perspective promotes self-esteem and confidence in individuals and as a group. Leaders that adopt this mentality provide their teams the ability to embrace change, adjust to changing conditions, and never stop aiming for perfection. Finally, carefully analyzing a situation and breaking it down for staff or fellow team members reinforces a leader's ability to create a cohesive and close knit environment.

Conclusion

Keyser notes that one of his most unique leadership features is catering conversations strategically. By asking specific detailed questions brings out the most raw and natural responses; creating a more genuine and interactive conversation. Honest and open communication between executives and employees fosters openness and respect for one another. This type of transparency promotes the exchange of thoughts, concerns, and criticism, which results in creative fixes and development. Interactive dialogues help team members feel more committed and purposeful as they align with the organization's aims and values. Having been a business owner for over two decades, currently owning 31 franchises across the United States, and being the chairman of “Multi-Unit Franchising Conference” Keyser has a comprehensive and well rounded background on how to manage the entirety of a business. Towards the end of the interview Keyser mentioned his college years explaining how his roommates gave him the name “Lucky”. He interpreted the nickname as a sign of good omen and has 'owned it' throughout his career.
